Large unfinished nutcrackers combine two things crafters usually have to choose between: real presence and total creative freedom. The figure arrives bare, often in wood or a primed composite, at a height that reads as a display piece rather than a trinket. That size makes the painting easier, because there is room for faces, buttons, and trim detail. Finished well, one figure can carry a hallway or porch on its own. It also works as a group project, with each person taking a section.
Check the material before planning your finish, since bare wood takes stain and acrylic paint differently than a primed composite. A primer coat smooths the surface and helps colors cover evenly, and a matte sealer protects the finished piece from handling. Mask the jaw lever if the figure has one so it keeps working. For outdoor use, choose exterior paint and seal the base, and keep the figure out of standing water.
